| A practical look at how tourists can do laundry in Korea |
For most trips longer than a week, packing clothes for every day is unnecessary if you choose a realistic time and place to do laundry.
In Korea, finding a washing machine is rarely the hardest part. The bigger issue is whether a dryer is available and whether your clothes will be ready before checkout.
How Much Clothing Should You Pack?
- 7 days or less: You may be able to complete the trip without laundry, depending on the season and your itinerary.
- 8–12 days: Pack five or six days of clothing and plan one laundry session.
- 2–3 weeks: Plan one or two laundry sessions rather than packing clothes for every day.
- Multiple-city trips: Do not depend on doing laundry during a one-night stay.
For a ten-day trip, five or six days of clothing is a reasonable starting point, provided you have already decided where and when to do laundry.
Summer heat and humidity may require more frequent washing. In winter, the main concern is how long thick clothing takes to dry.
If you are still finalizing your itinerary, this guide on how many days you need in Korea can help you decide whether your schedule includes a suitable stay for laundry.
Which Laundry Option Should You Actually Choose?
| Your situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Hotel has both washer and dryer | Use the hotel facilities |
| Accommodation has a washer but no dryer | Wash only light items or use a coin laundry |
| Coin laundry is within an easy walk | Use it for a full load or thick clothing |
| Hotel offers staff laundry | Use it only for a few important garments |
| No practical machine is available | Hand wash only small, quick-drying items |
If your hotel has both a washer and dryer, use them first. Saving a few thousand won at an outside laundromat is rarely worth carrying laundry through the neighborhood or interrupting your evening.
An Airbnb washer is useful only when you also have enough drying space and at least one full night remaining. Confirm whether there is a dryer or only a drying rack. For jeans, hoodies, or a full load, a nearby coin laundry with a commercial dryer is usually more reliable.
A washing machine is not the same as a complete laundry solution. The real problem is discovering too late that there is no practical way to dry the clothes before checkout.
Treat “laundry facilities” at a guesthouse as unconfirmed until the property confirms whether a dryer is included and whether guests can use the machines themselves.
Hotel staff laundry is usually poor value for socks, underwear, and everyday T-shirts. It is better suited to a few garments that need careful handling.
Hotel Koreana, for example, notes that same-day return depends on submitting laundry before 10:00, and the service is unavailable on Sundays and public holidays. This is why the return time matters more than the drop-off time.
Hand washing should remain an emergency option for socks, underwear, or a lightweight top rather than a plan for an ordinary travel load.
How to Find and Use a Coin Laundry in Korea
Search 코인세탁, 셀프빨래방, or 빨래방 on Naver Map or KakaoMap. 세탁소 usually means a staffed laundry or dry cleaner rather than a self-service laundromat.
In practice, a laundromat within an easy walk of your accommodation is more useful than a cheaper one that requires a subway ride.
For help with Korean maps and image translation, see this guide to the Korea travel apps most visitors actually need.
If the machine has no English controls, Papago image translation can identify the main buttons: 세탁 (wash), 건조 (dry), 표준 (standard), and 시작 (start).
Payment methods vary by branch, and foreign cards are not guaranteed to work at every unattended machine. Carry a few KRW 1,000 notes as a backup. Check whether detergent is dispensed automatically before adding your own.

When Should You Do Laundry?
The safest time is the second or third day of your longest stay, when at least two nights remain before checkout. Avoid doing laundry before an early train, flight, or hotel change, and leave enough time for another drying cycle if the first one is not enough.
For a five-night stay in Seoul, this means doing laundry on the second or third evening rather than waiting until the fifth.
If your itinerary includes Seoul, Busan, Gyeongju, and Jeju, use the middle of the longest stay. A one-night accommodation is not a sensible place for your main laundry session, even if it lists a washing machine.
The final night is the least reliable option. A dryer may be occupied, one cycle may not be enough, or the machine may not work as expected, leaving you to pack damp clothes the next morning.
Do not plan laundry around how many clean clothes you have left. Plan it around how many nights remain before your next checkout.
How Much Time and Money Should You Allow?
A standard coin-laundry wash and dry can take around 60 minutes, but allow about 1.5–2.5 hours in your itinerary for walking, waiting, or additional drying.
The following examples use prices published by Cleantopia and two central Seoul hotels, checked in July 2026:
| Option | Selected example cost | Practical judgment |
|---|---|---|
| Coin laundry wash and dry | KRW 6,500–9,000 | Best for a full load when your accommodation has no dryer |
| Hotel self-service laundry | KRW 9,000–11,000 | Often worth the extra cost for convenience |
| Hotel staff laundry | Priced per item | Use only for a few important garments |
These are selected examples rather than nationwide averages. For most travelers, the difference of a few thousand won matters less than losing part of an evening or carrying laundry far from the hotel.
For most Korea trips longer than a week, the simplest plan is one laundry session during the middle of your longest stay. Confirm the dryer first, then choose the closest reliable option that does not interrupt your itinerary.
